Utah Fly fishing during the winter month of January 2011, which in fact was Park City Excursions first guided fly fishing trip of 2011. Doug and I decided to take our Park City clients to a favorite section of ours on the lower Provo River. The day turned out to be an incredible day to do some winter fly-fishing despite the frigid temperature, which if properly equipped with adequate gear pose no problem at all. There are many misconceptions about winter fly fishing to the river freezes over and how could anyone survive in water in January. Which is understandable, but when thought about logically we every other winter sport is done in snow which by nature is colder than than water that is below freezing. despite the temperatures, which were well below freezing. it was a clear sunny beautiful day, and the fact the trout were biting, kept us from thinking or even feeling the cold weather bite, as well as being prepared with correct gear for the conditions. In fact, we had two drag two of the clients literally off the water as they were the Provo river bug had made its way into there minds dreading the idea they had to leave fish yet to be hooked and landed. Unfortunately the trip was cut short as they had new guests arriving to Park City later that afternoon that needed to be picked up from Salt Lake City international airport. The day was a success and these guys had just purchased a home in Deer Valley and surely will be back to the Provo as soon as they get the opportunity. These guys were troopers in town from Puerto Rico which was fun for me and gave me the opportunity communicate with them in Spanish another great passion of mine. As you will see from the photos we had a great day, and had the Provo river to our self which was a treat in of it self.. I did end up with my paws in the Provo river on a few occasions and that took a few hours to regain feeling in the tips of my fingers, but other than that, which when fishing in January, let the guide do the fish handling, it was a fantastic day to be out fly fishing Utah's most well known blue ribbon fishery, located in close proximity to downtown Park City. Twenty to thirty minutes depending on where you decide to spend your time fishing. A winter fly fishing excursion on the Provo, Weber or any other Utah fishery is highly recommended and often times if you are looking for a break from the slopes, to give the knees and legs a rest, additionsly to add diversity and see more of what the majestic Wasatch mountains have to offer, fly-fishing is a top rated choice. If it sounds like it might be up your ally please give us a call and we would be more than happy to set up a thrilling adventure to add to your winter vacation here in Park City Utah.
